Definition
Advance notification to members of a meeting or action, sent within the timeframe and method required by the governing documents or law.
Notice is the advance notification an HOA must give members before a meeting or certain actions. Proper notice is a legal requirement, and getting it wrong is one of the most common ways boards invite challenges.
Requirements — how far in advance, to whom, by what method, and what the notice must contain — are set by your bylaws and state law. Boards should send notice on time to every eligible member and document that they did so, since the record matters if a decision is ever questioned.
