Definition
A federal tax ID number an HOA uses to open bank accounts, file taxes, and identify itself to the IRS.
An EIN is the federal tax identification number the IRS assigns to the association as an entity — the organizational equivalent of a Social Security number. An HOA needs one to open bank accounts, file tax returns, and handle payroll or vendor reporting.
The EIN stays with the association permanently and identifies it on official and financial documents. New or transitioning associations should confirm they have one on file.
